Cultivating Concrete: Mentoring the Urban Farmer

As vocational educators at EFA El Soto, our active participation in the European Ecojobs Project has fundamentally redefined our teaching approach. We are no longer just technical instructors; we have evolved into mentors of sustainable business ideas.

Among the various emerging green profiles we analyse, the “Urban Farmer” stands out as a transformative opportunity for our students, bridging the gap between traditional agricultural wisdom and modern urban necessity. Mentoring a student towards becoming an Urban Farmer involves much more than teaching hydroponics or vertical farming techniques; it requires guiding them to visualise a resilient business model where sustainability meets profitability.

We focus heavily on adapting the business canvas to the green economy, helping students identify specific local niches- such as growing gourmet mushrooms or microgreens for nearby restaurants—that ensure financial viability. We challenge our students to reimagine city rooftops as productive spaces and to view the urban landscape as a carbon-absorbing ecosystem. Through the Ecojobs methodology, we guide these future entrepreneurs to shorten supply chains drastically, utilise organic waste for circular composting, and bring true “Km 0” food to the concrete jungle.

This mentoring process transforms vocational training into a direct engine for the Green Economy, proving that the future of farming is not solely in the rural fields, but also on the city skyline. At EFA El Soto, we are proud to cultivate this new generation of professionals who are ready to green our cities from within.
